I woke up feeling sick this morning. A headache, running nose, and a sore throat. Oh no, a cold! Ugh. On top of that I'm suffering from PMS big time. I cannot stop eating junk food. I walked though the snow to the $1 store yesterday just so that I could have some chips and cookie. Today, I had more chips. I always eat like a pig when I have PMS. I get really strong cravings for anything with fat in it. Thankfully, I don't have any more junk food in my house. I don't really have much food. I'm not going food shopping until Thursday.

Pookie is sick too. We tend to share our sickness with each other. Either I get sick and give it to him or he gets sick and gives it to me. That's love.

Even though I'm sick I still worked out today. I know I shouldn't exercise when I'm sick but I hadn't been in a couple of days and I was staring to feel lazy. I don't like that feeling. The gym is always packed this time of the year. People feeling guilty for eating to much during the holidays. It's actually kind of annoying. I like it when the gym is quieter. I was actually going to spend tmie with Pookie today but since we're sick we decided not to. We would probably just get each other sick all over again!

"Veronica, why are you pulling my dick?"

I watched a bunch of dvd's this week. I'm addicted to them. I love the nice cases and all of the special features.
Yesterday I watched Heathers for the first time in years. It's very.

Space Ghost Coast-To-Coast in just plain weird. Watching it last night I couldn't decide whether is was just a weird show or a really bad show. One thing I like is how Space Ghost always talks about his strength and special powers and than he asks his guest what their special power is. I thought that was kind of cute.

Shrek is one of my favorite animated movies. The sequel is coming out in May. I love how they include all of the fairy tale characters in the movie. The 3 Blind mice were just so cute.

Return of the Living Dead is the really bad sequel to Night of the Living dead. It was a typical cheesy 80's horror movie. I spent more time laughing than being scared. My favorite part was when the black slimy zombie starting saying "brains! brains! oh! more brains! It was pretty damn funny.

The first half and hour or so of Legally Blonde was really good. I started to lose interest right around the time that she started doing well at Harvard. I'm not sure why but this movie just didn't do it for me. Romey and Michelle's High School Reunion was a much more enjoyable bad movie.

Friday Five

1. What was the last thing you purchased?

I just bought 4 DVD'S at circuit city this morning. I got Legally Blonde, Shrek, Robocop(for my brother)and Rocky(for pookie).

3. Do you prefer shopping online or at an actual store? Why?

I prefer an actual store because, I like to look at my item before buying it. A picture on this internet just doesn't cut it. That doesn't usually apply to books though. Those I usually purchase online.

4. Did you get an allowance as a child? How much was it?

When I was around 6 and 7 I got $1 a week. I would spend it on candy of course. When I got older it went up to $20.

5. The show, protested by many women's groups as soft-core pornography and degrading to women, was aired at 9 p.m. EST, allowing a nation of sexually curious and hormonally ravaged youths to view the dangerous material.
“There was a lot of complaint leading up to the show, via email,” said one of the FCC's five commissioners, Michael Copps. “But now I'm getting dozens of emails and phone calls from parents saying their salivating 13-year-olds have raped neighborhood girls in the middle of the day in shopping malls, and stories like that. We are deeply regretful for allowing such prurient programming to air.”
Cases of 11-, 12-, and 13-year-olds raping friends and family have shot up across the country since Thursday night (see diagram). Over half of the rapes occurred within one hour of the program's airtime.
“We cannot believe the carelessness of the FCC, CBS, and Victoria's Secret in this matter,” said Melanie Brighton, a Concerned Women for America spokesperson. “It's as if they all believe that the average 12-year-old is capable of handling such a bombardment of sexual suggestion. We've been campaigning against overpowering television like this for years. Now they can see what we were talking about. Hopefully it's not too late.”
Although a great deal of damage has been done, Copps does not believe it is too late to remedy the situation, and prevent similar waves of media-inspired rape in the future.
“Obviously, we're going to have to really buckle down on what is deemed suitable for air,” he explained. “As for now, we must censure CBS for its negligence and look into class action litigation to force CBS and Victoria's Secret to reimburse the victims and to pay for rehabilitation for those who committed the crimes. Whatever course of action is chosen, we will be with the victims' families one hundred percent.”

Hey, look at what my ass says!

Reading the latest entry in Margaret Cho's blog reminded me of a fashion trend that I have been noticing lately. Women wearing pants with writing on the buttocks. Maybe someone reading this could explain the appeal to me. Most of the words aren't all that offensive. Take the words Star Booty for example. Personally, I would never wear them but they aren't nearly as offensive as pants that say baby girl or juicy. I saw a pair of the juicy pants in a NY Times advertisement. I find this term to be very offensive when referring to my body parts. Mostly because when I think of the word juicy I think of a piece of meat and not a human being. I saw the baby girl pants last weekend in one of those stupid little clothing stores that sells very feminine and stereotypical clothing. It's not the kind of store that I normally go in but I was curious to see how the other half lives. That's when I saw them, light pink pants with the words Baby Girl across the back. I made a comment about it to my brother who was with me when I saw them. I said "Would you ever see a man wearing a pair of pants that say baby boy on the back?" He said "Oh of course not." Some things never change.

Menstruation fun

Museum of Menstruation This site is really informative. However, the truth is that gender is a socially constructed status. We are born either male or female but we are taught to be either masculine or feminine. Even before we are born our parents prepare for our roles. One example of this would be parents buying either blue or pink clothes depending on the gender of their baby. This may not seem like it is important but it is just the beginning of a life long process.

For the individual, gender construction starts with the assignment to a sex category on the basis of what the genitalia look like at birth. A sex category becomes a gender status through naming, dress, and the use of other gender markers. Gender markers may differ from culture to culture however, sociologists have discovered that many cultures have very similar traits that are ascribed separately to men and women. For women these traits include vulnerability, passivity, and submissiveness. For men these traits include glorified violence, aggressiveness, and autonomy. Our parents first teach these traits to us. We learn our roles as men and women in society by watching our parents. As we get older we learn to follow the same traits. This is how gender roles are passed on from generation to generation. The modern media also contributes to gender stereotyping. Women on TV and in the movies are almost always displayed as sexually submissive. While men are usually depicted as being sexually aggressive. In many cases the educational system also enforces gender roles. Some schools even segregate male and female students and teach them subjects based on gender stereotypes. These learned behaviors tend to make it very difficult for people to see how gender is constructed. The differences in men and women seem to be self-evident, and we think they would occur no matter what society did.

The rise of feminism in the 1960’s led some people to discover new way of looking at gender. Feminist sociologists in particular emphasized the way that society enforces gender roles and how these roles are harmful to women. This approach works “to make gender visible in social phenomena, asking if, how, and why social processes, standards, and opportunities differ systematically for women and men. One of the discoveries made by feminist sociologists is that gender is a stratification system that values men over women. As a result the work that men do is considered more important than the work that women do."

cough

I'll try not to get my germs all over the blog. Make sure you leave a comment here with a link to your post (or just leave your answers in the comments section here).

1. What was your first Halloween costume? Well the first costume that I remember wearing was a Wonder Woman costume. I guess that I always had a little bit of a feminist in me! It was one of those cheap costumes that comes with a little paper mask. I didn't bother with a wig for some reason. Considering that I'm a blonde and the real Wonder Woman isn't.

2. What was your best costume and why?
My favorite costume was the devil costume that I wore when I was 12. The costume itself was made very well. What I remember most about it is that I covered my face with my mother's red blush. I remember this because, I wasn't able to get it all off the next day and when I went to school my face looked a little sunburned. Mind you this was in the middle of fall in NY so, it was kind of embarrassing!

3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn't give you a treat?
Nope. I never really played tricks. That would be mean. People don't have to give out candy if they don't want to!

4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? (ie: Family pumpkin carving, special dinner before trick or treating, etc.) Well since being out on my own I always decorate the outside of my apartment. I actually have quite a bit of space to work with. I put spiderwebs on my screen door and I have a little pine treet that I put orange and black garland on. I always buy candy the next day for myself because, it's on sale.

5. Share your favorite scary story...real or legend!
I don't think that I have ever had a favorite scary story. I loved the book Frankenstein but, I wouldn't consider it to be scary.

Vegetarian News

I found some pretty interesting vegetarian/vegan news stories this morning

It seems that vegetarian only housing developments are becoming very popular in some parts of the world. I already have a journal and a website. I guess that a blog is the next step. Pookie(my bf)was the one who told me that I should start a blog. This was several months ago and of course I didn't listen. He didn't forget about it though and he bought me a book on blogging by Rebecca Blood It was a pretty good book. In fact as soon as I finished it I started searching for blogs. That's when I became hooked.

I have a pretty easy time becoming hooked to things on the internet. The truth is that, I love the internet. As crazy as it may sound to some people I can't imagine my life without it. I'm feeling rather nostalgic today thinking about when I first started using the internet in 96. For some reason my mom decided that we needed a computer. I still remember the first time that I went online and how slow our modem(28 I think it was) was. Back than we had AOL 2.0 which was a big mistake. Sometimes it would take anywhere from half an hour to an hour to get online. Still, I was hooked from the second I saw my first website. Back than I spent most of my time online in chat rooms. Than 4 years ago I discovered open diary That made me give up chat rooms for good. Now, I spend most of my time online peeking into other people's lives.
Looking through my other blog entries I realize that I have given very little detail about myself. I've looked at so many other blogs written by other women my age and it has left me wondering what make me unique? How do I differ from them? Why should anyone want to read my blog? I've decided that the best way to handle the whole getting to know me thing would be to make a list of things about me that I think are important.

I'm left-handed

I'm 5'10 which makes me half a foot taller than the average American female.

I'm a vegetarian

I'm a feminist

I love old movies

I LOVE sci-fi

I've been in a serious relationship for 4 and a half years

I have a temper

I love reading mystery novels

I live in NY

That's all that I can thing of right now. One kiss from you, however, and I will turn back into the dapper, young prince that I am and then, my sweet, we can marry and setup housekeeping in your castle with my mother, where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children, and forever feel grateful and happy doing so.
That night, as the princess dined sumptuously on a repast of lightly sauteed frog legs seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce, she chuckled to herself and thought................

I don't f**king think so.

Prozac Humor

Daylight savings time drive me crazy. Or, if you're unmarried, do you plan to take your husband's last name? Why or why not?

How about Mrs.? Are you, will you ever, be "Mrs." anyone, or is "Ms." the only title you will will ever take?

In general how do you think this naming thing should be handled? Last names, children's names, etc."

I've thought about the last name change before. I've decided that I would either not change my last name or switch names with my SO. I have never thought of myself as a piece of property and I would never marry someone who thought of me that way. I also like my last name. It was my father's last name and he died when I was a child. To me keeping his name is like keeping a part of him with me forever. It would break my heart to change that.
I've never thought about being a Mrs. vs being a Ms. For some reason it just doesn't bother me as much as changing my last name would. Than again isn't it the same thing? Okay, I'll keep the Ms. than too!
I don't really want kids so, childrens names have never been an issue with me. I'd probably wind up giving my kids weird hippie soundsing names anyway.

Please note I'm working on my blog template right now(is anyone even reading this?) so, it's going to take a while for my blog to look really nice. I'm in the middle of learning CSS. I've known how to use HTML for a while now thanks to About's HTML 101 class. They also have a CSS class which I plan on signing up for. I can read all of the books in the world on CSS but, it won't do any good unless I practice what I have read.

Tonight I'm going to a Halloween party. Hopefully they will have lots of these:

I bought some yesterday at CVS.

I read Frankenstein for the first time 2 years ago. It became my one of my favorite books overnight. You can read it online here After you read it answer this: Who was really the bad guy Dr. Frankenstein or his creation? In my oh so humble opinion. It was the doctor who did the wrong thing. He created a life without thinking about the consequences and than when he didn't like his creation he adandoned it. Frankenstein's monster was more a victim of circumstances than an actual monster. On of the most important things that I learned from that book was that you really cannot just somehow by how they look.

I think that she is really pretty.

If that sounds unfeminist of me, I'm sorry.
